Le Diplomate on 14th Street NW is the kind of place that channels the classic Parisian brasserie with a distinctly Washington twist. It’s a full-service French restaurant where the atmosphere settles somewhere between a lively European bistro and an elegant spot for a special night out. The interior feels warm and bustling, offering a polished yet approachable setting that works well for everything from brunch gatherings to intimate dinners.

Visitors here can expect a menu that reads like a thoughtful journey through French cuisine with modern touches—their steak au poivre, escargots à la bourguignonne, and duck confit are popular picks that illustrate both comfort and finesse. For those open to trying something a bit different, dishes like the foie gras parfait or croque madame provide classic flavors with a nuanced execution. The daily specials also bring variety, featuring seafood like lobster risotto or Dover sole meunière, which hint at the kitchen’s versatility.

The service tends to be a highlight in many dining experiences, with attentive staff knowledgeable about the menu and ready to offer recommendations—adding a personal layer to the dining that makes guests feel looked after without hovering. However, some visits reveal occasional slow moments, particularly in solo dining situations, suggesting the pace can vary during peak times.

The vibe is lively but not overwhelming, making it a popular choice for date nights or celebrations. It’s best visited in the evening when the restaurant’s warm lighting and subtle hum of conversation create a cozy, slightly upscale mood. Brunch here also attracts locals looking for a taste of French flair on weekend mornings, with dishes like brioche French toast and eggs Benedict rounding out the offerings.

Given its price point and polished presentation, Le Diplomate suits those seeking a dining experience that blends familiarity with an elevated touch—folks who appreciate thoughtful, well-prepared French fare in a space that invites both conversation and celebration through the meal.

The whole experience was stellar. Pablo was our server, and it was truly the best service we’ve had in Washington. He was knowledgeable about the menu, offered fantastic recommendations, and made our dining experience feel really special. He was attentive and quick to take care of anything we needed. We ordered the steak frites, onion soup, and steak tartare, and every dish was absolutely delicious. I would definitely come back here the next time I’m in Washington.

We celebrated my birthday at Le Diplomate this past Saturday night and it was absolutely phenomenal. From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was perfect for a special night out. The food and beverages were exceptional with a highlight on super fresh oysters and my favorite cocktail- Romarin. Our server was incredibly attentive, making sure our glasses were never empty and explaining food to details. But highlight of our night was the restaurant manager Hadia. She truly elevated the whole experience from the very first moment. As soon as we arrived she greeted us with celebratory drink and through the night she made sure that everything was just perfect for my birthday. Hadia's personal touch and dedication to creating a welcoming space made our meal unforgettable. The next day my guests couldn't speak highly enough about the whole experience. Le Diplomate and Hadia many thanks for a perfect birthday!!

Le Diplomate is an incredible spot for date night. It’s right on 14th Street and perfectly captures that classic European brasserie atmosphere. It’s definitely on the pricier side, but absolutely worth it for a special evening. I highly recommend the steak frites, escargot, and duck. The duck, in particular, has a subtle orangey note that’s unlike anything I’ve ever tasted — rich, balanced, and memorable. We’ve also tried the artichokes before, which weren’t really my favorite, but everything else has been consistently excellent. The indoor dining room is elegant, but we’ve only ever sat outdoors, where the ambiance is just as lovely. We love this place and will definitely be back!

Great experience, great service. The escargot was the best I have had. I really liked the taste of the Beef Bourguignon and the Duck L'orange, but my favorite part of both was the texture of the meat, cooked perfectly! Didn't really care for the foie gras although I couldn't pinpoint why, normally a fan of it. Bread was just okay but cannot complain since it was complimentary. Overall, one of the best French restaurants I have been to.

I went there for solo dining. Atmosphere is really good and lots of Christmas decor. There are a lot of option for food and drinks. But the service was slow and my server did not pay attention to me. I asked many times bread and butter. Also, he brought my wine when the food ends. Overall was good. I have ordered steak tartare, steak frites and crème brule. Presentation are fabolous. Steak frites was awesome and huge. But I am gonna say the same thing for crème brule. It was average, I have eaten better ones in DC area.

The food was good, but not as good as I had hoped. Dessert was delicious! Very popular place. The atmosphere was nice and festive for the holidays. Service was good too. Parking is non existent, so do valet parking and save yourself the trouble of searching for a spot to park. Overall a nice place to dine and have drinks. We don't drink, if we did maybe I would give it a better rating...

My experience at this restaurant was excellent with the food and the service. The decor of the place was very pretty. The food was delicious. The coffee was super delicious, with an intense and tasty flavor. I loved it. The waiter who served us, I have to say this. We had a small incident with the coffee, but he resolved it super quickly. He was very attentive from the beginning, very kind and respectful. We were super happy with the attention from Mr. Amaya. I have to mention him because he gave us excellent service. I highly recommend this restaurant. Everything was excellent: the food, the service, the atmosphere, everything was a very nice experience! Highly recommended!!

Everything about this restaurant was amazing and worth the reservation. That great customer service, the atmosphere is beautiful along with the lighting. I did the onion soup, which was amazing, the radish salad was better than the fig salad, my steak was outstanding, I got the Demi sauce on the side, which worked out perfectly, my spinach was delicious, and also ordered crème brûlée. Definitely say yes to the bread that is freshly cut per table at the beginning of your meal, it was phenomenal. My friend got scallops and he said they were amazing.
